Chennai: England were off to a solid start in the opening test as they went to lunch with 63 for no loss at Chennai. At the break AJ Strauss with 31 runs and AN Cook with 31 runs were holding fort for the hosts.

Earlier, England captain Kevin Pietersen won the toss and elected to bat first.

England started of confidently with Cook and Strauss saw through the opening spell of the Indian bowlers without any trouble.
